Work begins on ₹2,000-cr 8-lane tunnel in Southwest Delhi

The Delhi government has started work on a 8-lane tunnel that will connect Southwest Delhi to the National Capital Region. The tunnel, which is being built at a cost of ₹2,000 crore, will reduce the travel time between the two regions by 30 minutes. The tunnel will be built under the Yamuna river and will be the longest riverine tunnel in India. The project is expected to be completed in 2022.

The National Highways Authority of India has started groundwork for the eight-lane tunnel in Southwest Delhi with an investment of ₹2,000 crore. It will have the first eight-lane underground pass and be one of the widest tunnels in the nation at around 14 metres wide. The Dwarka Expressway, Delhi-Jaipur, and Nelson Mandela Highway will all be connected by the 5 kilometre long tunnel. More than three lakh cars will be able to use this tunnel every day once it is operational, and it is anticipated to relieve traffic on a number of congested roadways, including the border highway between Delhi and Gurgaon.

The Dwarka Expressway will be built from Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj to Shiv Murti Chowk on NH-48 (formerly known as NH-8 Delhi-Jaipur). It will link the Vasant Kunj flyover to NH-48.
