The Minister of Public Works (Building and Roads) of Haryana, Banwari Lal, has unveiled a plan to invest 2,750 crore for the fiscal year 2024–25 to improve the quality and condition of 1,425 roads totaling 4,655 kilometres.

At a cost of ₹600 crore, the project consists of 51 state highways spanning 680 kilometres, 43 major district roads spanning 725 kilometres, and 1,331 more district roads spanning 3,250 km, all at a cost of ₹1,650 crore. By September 2024, these enhancements are supposed to be finished. In addition, patchwork repairs were made to 3,400 kilometres of road between March 1, 2024, and June 30, 2024. The NABARD loan support programme will upgrade about 700 kilometres of village roads in 2024–2025.

In the fiscal year 2024-25, the Haryana Public Works (Building and Roads) Department has embarked on an ambitious project to enhance the state’s road infrastructure. Spearheaded by Minister Dr. Banwari Lal, the initiative aims to improve the riding quality and condition of 1,425 roads, covering a total length of 4,655 kilometers, with an investment of ₹2,750 crore.

The comprehensive plan encompasses various categories of roads across the state:

  • State Highways: 51 projects covering 680 kilometers have been approved, with an allocated budget of ₹600 crore. Of these, 28 projects have already been awarded, while the remaining are in the process of allocation. prharyana.gov.in
  • Major District Roads: 43 projects spanning 725 kilometers are set to receive ₹500 crore.
  • Other District Roads: 1,331 projects covering 3,250 kilometers have been sanctioned with a budget of ₹1,650 crore. Tenders for 1,174 of these roads have been invited, and 362 projects have been awarded to contractors. prharyana.gov.in

Rural Road Development

In addition to the above, approximately 700 kilometers of village roads will be improved under the NABARD Loan Assistance Scheme during 2024-25. This initiative aims to enhance rural connectivity, facilitating better access to markets, healthcare, and educational institutions for village residents.

The department has set an ambitious target to complete the improvement works by September 2024. Minister Dr. Banwari Lal has emphasized the importance of maintaining high-quality standards throughout the execution of these projects, stating that any compromise on quality will not be tolerated.

Expected Outcomes

Upon completion, this extensive road improvement initiative is anticipated to:

  • Enhance Commuter Experience: Smoother and safer roads will lead to reduced travel times and vehicle wear and tear.
  • Boost Economic Activities: Improved road conditions are expected to facilitate better movement of goods and services, thereby stimulating economic growth in the region.
  • Strengthen Rural Connectivity: Upgraded village roads will provide rural populations with improved access to essential services and opportunities.
