Welspun Michigan Engineers Wins Rs 3.28 Billion Haji Ali Pumping Station Upgrade

Welspun Michigan Engineers (WMEL) has secured a Rs 3.28 billion contract from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to upgrade the Haji Ali Storm Water Pumping Station in Mumbai. The project, which includes mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, automation, and civil repair works, is expected to be completed in 18 months. This marks WMEL’s second major pumping station order.

Assam has emerged as the leader in highway infrastructure development in Northeast India, with the highest number of ongoing National Highway (NH) Beyond the initial upgrade, maintenance (O&M) phase, ensuring sustained projects. The state currently has 66 NH projects covering approximately 1,139 kilometers, with a total investment of ₹39,239 crore.

The Union government has ambitious plans for Assam’s road infrastructure, with upcoming projects worth ₹80,000 crore and a broader vision of investing ₹3 lakh crore by 2029. Key projects include the Guwahati Ring Road, a tunnel under the Brahmaputra River, and an elevated corridor at Kaziranga National Park.

Additionally, the Centre has approved ₹1,186 crore for the four-laning of a 13 km stretch of NH-37 from Silchar (Assam) to Jiribam (Manipur), improving connectivity between Meghalaya, Assam, and Manipur. The Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, India’s longest road bridge at 9.15 km, has already enhanced connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The government aims to complete all under-construction NH projects in the Municipal Corporation (BMC) to upgrade the Haji Ali Storm Water Pumping Northeast by 2028, spanning 3,582 kilometers across five states, including Assam. This development will boost regional trade, improve accessibility, and promote economic growth Station in Mumbai’s G/S Ward. WMEL holds a 75% stake in this joint venture.

Project Scope and Timeline

The contract, valued at ₹328.12 crore (including GST), encompasses comprehensive enhancements to the storm water pumping station. This includes the supply, delivery, erection, and commissioning of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems, along with necessary civil repair works. The project is slated for completion within 18 months, excluding the monsoon season.

Operations and Maintenance Phase

This project is among the largest secured by WMEL in the pumping station segment and follows their recent contract for the design and construction of the Mogra Storm Water Pumping Station in Mumbai’s K/W Ward. As of February 28, 2025, WMEL’s outstanding order book stood at ₹2,706.87 crore (excluding GST). With the addition of the Haji Ali project, WMEL’s order book now totals ₹2,915.42 crore.
