The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is building road projects totaling Rs 1,054 crore to ensure speedier freight evacuation and facilitate transshipment to Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, and other key centres. VPA and NHAI are building road projects under Bharatmala to decongest highways and boost last-mile connectivity in the port sector. This will enable the timely delivery of items for which VPA has already invested 237 crore in capital expenditure. The port intends to invest around 208 crore on capital works for infrastructure expansion starting this fiscal year. The port capacity will increase to 146 MTPA from the current 127 MTPA with the completion of these developments. VPA is implementing a number of steps to improve the port’s environmental management, with the goal of reducing its carbon footprint to zero in the future years. With a budget of over 60 crore, the administration has already put up a master plan for revamping the drainage system and upgrading the stockyards.
