The Jewar airport in Noida and the IGI airport in Delhi are connected by a 72 km (7,630 crore) high-speed metro rail corridor project that has been given priority. The Yamuna Expressway Authority’s board has accepted the detailed project report (DPR) for phase 1 of the project, which spans 35 kilometres from Knowledge Park II to Jewar airport.
Now, work will shortly begin on creating a DPR for the second phase, which would consist of a 37km metro rail track connecting Greater Noida’s Knowledge Park II to New Delhi metro station (which connects with the Airport Express Line). The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has received a deposit of Rs 1.87 crore from the Yamuna Expressway Authority for the creation of the DPR. In six months, it should be finished.
In accordance with the DPR, DMRC will provide a report on the traction system, station locations, station types, and projected ridership, among other things. Four stations in total, one of which will be underground, are proposed for this route: New Ashok Nagar, Okhla Bird Sanctuary, Noida’s Sector 142, and Underground Delhi Gate. Its operational speed is 120 kmph, while its top speed is 135 kmph.
The Uttar Pradesh government has accelerated the development of a ₹7,630 crore high-speed metro corridor designed to link Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport with the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar. This strategic 72-kilometer project aims to enhance regional connectivity and reduce travel time between these significant aviation hubs.
Project Phases and Progress
The metro corridor is planned in two phases:
- Phase 1: Spanning approximately 35.64 kilometers, this segment connects Knowledge Park II in Greater Noida to the Noida International Airport in Jewar. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this phase received approval from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) in September 2022. timesofindia.indiatimes.com
- Phase 2: Covering about 36.36 kilometers, this phase extends the corridor from Knowledge Park II to New Delhi Metro Station, facilitating a direct link to the IGI Airport via the Airport Express Line. In October 2022, YEIDA allocated ₹1.87 crore to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the preparation of the DPR for this phase, with completion expected within six months. timesofindia.indiatimes.com
Key Features and Benefits
- High-Speed Transit: The corridor is designed for trains operating at speeds up to 120 km/h, significantly reducing travel time between the two airports.
- Strategic Stations: To ensure swift commutes, the high-speed metro line is projected to have six strategically located stations. hindustantimes.com
- Enhanced Connectivity: This metro link will seamlessly integrate with existing transit systems, including the Airport Express Line at New Delhi Metro Station, offering passengers efficient transfers between the two airports and other parts of the National Capital Region (NCR).
Recent Developments
In December 2024, the DMRC proposed a new elevated metro corridor to further improve connectivity between Noida International Airport and IGI Airport. This proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Uttar Pradesh government.
The expedited execution of this metro corridor underscores the Uttar Pradesh government’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure and fostering economic growth in the region. Upon completion, the project is poised to transform regional transit dynamics, offering a rapid and reliable transportation option for passengers traveling between these.
