UP Budget Allocates Rs 750 Crore for Noida International Airport: A Global Aviation Hub in the Making

The horizon in western Uttar Pradesh is shifting as the roar of progress becomes louder. In a decisive move to solidify the state’s position on the global aviation map, the UP Budget 2026 has officially allocated Rs 750 crore to the Noida International Airport (NIA). This is more than just a financial boost; it is a strategic catalyst for a multi-phase expansion aimed at transforming a greenfield site in Jewar into one of the world’s most sophisticated aviation and MRO ecosystems.

The Rs 750 Crore Breakdown: Beyond the Tarmac

While the airport prepares for its grand opening, this budgetary allocation is geared toward the long term. Out of the Rs 750 crore, approximately Rs 700 crore is set aside specifically for land acquisition in the third and fourth phases of the project.

The remaining Rs 50 crore is set aside for immediate construction and completion work. By securing land now, the Uttar Pradesh government ensures that the transition from a two-runway facility to a massive five-runway megahub proceeds smoothly and without bureaucratic or financial bottlenecks.

Transforming Jewar into an MRO Powerhouse

A key feature of this budget is the push for a world-class Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub. Currently, a significant portion of India’s aircraft fleet is sent abroad—to places like Singapore or Sri Lanka—for major technical maintenance.

The goal for NIA is to keep that business at home. By establishing an MRO hub in Jewar, the state is creating a specialised industrial zone where planes can undergo everything from routine maintenance to complex engine overhauls. This will save airlines millions in ferry flight costs while creating thousands of high-tech jobs for Indian engineers.

Five Runways: Scaling for the Future

The size of the expansion plan funded by this budget is staggering. The government has officially moved beyond the initial two-runway plan, aiming for five runways at full build-out.

This expansion is intended to have a maximum capacity of 70 million passengers annually. To put this in perspective, Noida International Airport would become one of the world’s busiest airports, effectively doubling the NCR’s air traffic capacity and providing a much-needed relief valve for Delhi’s IGI Airport.

An Innovation and Research Center

The UP government is not just building runways; it is also establishing a brain trust. The strategic plan includes the establishment of an aviation innovation and research center.

This facility will concentrate on the future of flight, including green aviation technologies and advanced logistics management. By combining research with an operational MRO hub, Jewar aims to become a self-sustaining “Aerotropolis” where academia, industry, and operations coexist.

Fueling the Regional Economy

The effects of this Rs 750 crore investment will extend far beyond the airport gates. The surrounding Yamuna Motorway region is already experiencing an increase in industrial interest.

With the MRO hub and expanded cargo terminal, companies in the electronics, pharmaceutical, and textile industries are considering Jewar as their primary logistics gateway. This results in a virtuous cycle of development: better infrastructure attracts better business, which generates more revenue for future state expansion.

Connectivity: The Multi-Modal Edge

Strategic funding also ensures that the airport is not isolated. The expansion includes plans for seamless multimodal connectivity. The proposed Delhi-Varanasi High-Speed Rail (bullet train), pod taxi system, and extended Metro lines will make getting to the airport as futuristic as the facility itself.

The budget ensures that as the airport expands to five runways, so will the ground transportation infrastructure, avoiding the “traffic nightmares” that are commonly associated with mega-airports.

A Net Zero Vision

As the airport expands into its third and fourth phases, sustainability remains a priority. NIA is intended to be India’s first net-zero emissions airport.

The budgetary support aids in the implementation of large-scale solar farms and water treatment plants, allowing the facility to expand while minimising its carbon footprint. This commitment to “green growth” establishes the project as a model for future infrastructure in Asia.
