The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has commenced trial runs of the Meerut Metro trains, according to an official statement. The trial process involved testing the tracks and traction systems, with trains operating manually under the Train Control Management System (TCMS). During the trials, the train was initially run at a slow speed from Meerut South Station to just before the underground section at Meerut Central. The return journey was conducted at an increased speed. These trials mark a significant step toward the operational readiness of the Meerut Metro.
The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has initiated trial runs for the Meerut Metro, marking a significant milestone in enhancing urban mobility within the city. This development is part of the broader Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project, which aims to revolutionize regional connectivity.
Trial Run Details
The trial runs commenced on January 12, 2025, covering a 9.4 km stretch from Meerut South to just before Meerut Central Station. During these trials, trains were tested at varying speeds, starting from a slow pace and gradually increasing to assess track integrity and traction systems. Initially, operations were conducted manually under the Train Control Management System (TCMS) to ensure safety and system reliability.
Integration with Namo Bharat Corridor
The Meerut Metro is uniquely integrated with India’s first Namo Bharat corridor, a semi-high-speed rail network designed to enhance regional transit. This integration allows for seamless connectivity between local metro services and regional rapid transit, facilitating efficient movement across the National Capital Region (NCR). The current trial runs are a critical step toward operationalizing this integrated system, with the Meerut South to Shatabdi Nagar section being a focal point.
Project Specifications
The Meerut Metro spans a total length of 23 km, comprising 18 km of elevated tracks and a 5 km underground section. The project includes multiple stations designed to cater to the urban population’s commuting needs, with key stations such as Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram. These stations will serve both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the city and its outskirts.
Historical Context and Future Outlook
The foundation stone for the Meerut Metro, along with the Delhi-Meerut RRTS, was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 8, 2019. Construction commenced in June 2019, and despite various challenges, the project has progressed steadily. The Meerut Metro is poised to be the first rapid transit system in India directly integrated with a regional transit network on a single corridor. This design is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut, promoting economic growth and urban development in the region.
The NCRTC aims to complete all civil works and station constructions to make the full corridor operational by the end of 2025. As trial runs continue and system validations are performed, the residents of Meerut and the surrounding regions can anticipate a modern, efficient, and integrated transit solution that will transform daily commutes and bolster regional connectivity.
