Traffic Cops Identify 18 Accident Blackspots in the City

With the installation of three new locations on the Delhi-Meerut Motorway (DME), traffic police have identified 18 locations in the city that are prone to accidents. This is the first time that these places have been marked. The remaining locations are spread between three NH-9 points, five state highways, and seven internal city routes.

Masuri has been a major topic of concern due to its numerous accident-prone places. The three crucial blackspots on DME are located in Masuri and are close to the Udyog Kunj toll, Rasoolpur Sikroda, and the aeroplane restaurant.

The blackspots on NH-9 that have been identified are the area surrounding Kaushik Dhaba, Sunderdeep College and Sadbhavna Cut, and Manipal Hospital in Kavi Nagar. The final two locations are in Masuri as well.

In a recent assessment, the Delhi Traffic Police have identified 18 critical accident black spots across the city, highlighting areas with a high incidence of fatal road accidents. This initiative aims to enhance road safety by pinpointing and addressing locations prone to frequent mishaps.

Understanding Black Spots

Accident black spots are specific locations where road traffic accidents have historically been concentrated. Identifying these areas allows authorities to implement targeted interventions to reduce accidents and enhance safety for all road users.

Recent Findings

In 2024, Delhi witnessed a marginal decline of 3% in overall road accidents, decreasing from 5,834 incidents in 2023 to 5,657 in 2024. However, the number of fatal accidents saw a concerning rise of 5%, escalating from 1,432 to 1,504 during the same period. This uptick in fatalities underscores the necessity for focused attention on high-risk zones.

Notable Black Spots

The top 10 black spots identified accounted for 170 accidents in 2024, with a staggering 42.5% resulting in fatalities, leading to 79 deaths. Seven new locations have emerged in this list, indicating shifting patterns in accident prevalence.

Historically, areas such as Mukarba Chowk in North Delhi, Khampur village in Northwest Delhi, and Dhaula Kuan and Mayapuri Chowk in Southwest Delhi have been recognized as high-risk zones. These locations have consistently reported a significant number of fatal accidents, necessitating continuous monitoring and intervention.

Contributing Factors

Several factors contribute to the high incidence of accidents at these black spots:

• Infrastructure Deficiencies: Poor road design, inadequate signage, and insufficient lighting can create hazardous conditions for motorists and pedestrians alike.
• Traffic Volume: High-density traffic, especially at intersections and junctions, increases the likelihood of collisions.
• Driver Behavior: Speeding, reckless driving, and non-adherence to traffic signals significantly elevate the risk of accidents.

Proposed Interventions

To mitigate accidents at these identified black spots, the Delhi Traffic Police, in collaboration with civic agencies, are considering several measures:

• Infrastructure Upgrades: Improving road conditions, installing adequate signage, and enhancing street lighting to ensure safer travel.
• Traffic Management: Implementing measures such as synchronized traffic signals, designated pedestrian crossings, and speed regulation mechanisms.
• Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public on road safety norms, the importance of adhering to traffic rules, and promoting responsible driving behavior.
• Enhanced Enforcement: Increasing the presence of traffic personnel in high-risk areas to monitor compliance and deter traffic violations.
