Nripendra Mishra, chairman of the construction committee for the Ram temple in Ayodhya, announced that the temple will be completed by December 31st this year. The campus will feature a shrine of Sheshawatar, Lakshman, Lord Ram’s younger brother, along with temples of Sapta Rishis and Kobeshwar Mahadev.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi consecrated a temple on January 22, despite the Shankaracharyas’ warning that a religious structure should not be inaugurated before construction is complete. Many residents disapproved of a black stone idol of Lord Ram, claiming it was carved in south Indian tradition and did not resemble the popular image.
The construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has been a project of significant national interest, with its timeline undergoing several adjustments. As of December 2024, Nripendra Mishra, Chairman of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Construction Committee, announced that the temple’s construction is expected to be completed by June 2025. This includes the main temple structure, while additional features such as ramparts and shoe racks are projected to be finalized by September 2025.
Earlier in September 2024, Mishra had indicated that the construction of the temple’s ‘Shikhar’ (spire) would take approximately 120 days, with an initial target set for December 2024. However, this timeline was revised, and the completion of the spire was then anticipated by February 2025. The comprehensive work on the entire temple complex, including the main structure and surrounding facilities, was slated for completion by June 30, 2025.
The temple is designed to feature 85 murals, titanium lattices, and a Ram Darbar adorned with marble idols. Depictions of the Ramayana in multiple languages will also be incorporated, enhancing the cultural and spiritual experience for devotees. Weekly goals have been established to ensure the timely completion of various construction phases. One of the significant challenges identified is the construction of the rising tower, which requires careful consideration of aviation safety regulations.
In preparation for the temple’s consecration, two ancient Shaligram stones, weighing 26 and 14 tonnes respectively, were transported from the Gandaki River in Nepal to Ayodhya in January 2023. These sacred stones are intended for carving the idol of Ram Lalla, which will be installed in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.
The consecration ceremony, known as ‘Pran Pratishtha,’ was held on January 22, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the Vedic rituals during this ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the temple’s history. The event was part of ‘Ramotsav,’ a series of religious celebrations organized by the Uttar Pradesh government, which included the Ram Paduka Yatra retracing Lord Rama’s 14-year exile route.
The construction of the Ram Temple has been a monumental endeavor, reflecting the dedication and efforts of numerous individuals and organizations. With the main structure’s completion anticipated by mid-2025, the temple is poised to become a significant spiritual and cultural landmark, attracting devotees and tourists from around the world.
