The Goa mining companies’ petitions to the High Court of Bombay against the government’s decree requesting that they give up the licences under which they operated were denied. This is in accordance with a Supreme Court judgement dated October 13, 2020, which gave mining corporations three months to remove their possessions and apply lease takeover clauses.
The move-out date of January 31, 2021, was not met. On May 4, 2022, the government issued an order requesting that the leaseholders remove their equipment by August 4, 2022.
After the first deadline, the Goa Foundation went to the High Court to ask the Goa government for instructions on how to require the leaseholders to follow the SC judgement from October 13, 2020.
According to Claude Alvares, Director of the Goa Foundation to Herald, “the mining firms were trying to prevent the auctions from taking place and were doing all they could to block moving out of the leases.”
