TBM Breakthrough Achieved on Golden Line of Delhi Metro Phase-IV

The tunnel boring machine (TBM) successfully excavated a 1,550-meter tunnel at Vasant Kunj station for Phase-IV of Delhi Metro’s Golden Line, with two parallel circular tunnels being constructed for bidirectional movement. The tunnel consists of 1,107 tunnel rings with an inner diameter of 5.8 meters.

While substantial advancements have been made, certain aspects of the project, particularly passenger accessibility to the terminal building, require expedited efforts. Ensuring seamless access to the terminal is a critical factor for obtaining the aerodrome license and achieving full operational fu.

Once operational, the airport is expected to ease congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, handling an initial capacity of up to 12 million passengers annually. The long-term plan envisions two runways and four terminals, ultimately accommodating up to 90 million passengers p.

The completion of Phase 1 is anticipated to provide significant relief to the region’s air traffic, particularly with Mumbai International Airport’s Terminal 1 scheduled for closure in October 2025 for redevelopment. Airlines will coordinate with authorities to determine flight transitions to the ne.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved a significant milestone in its Phase-IV expansion with a tunnel boring machine (TBM) breakthrough on the Golden Line, specifically between Chhatarpur Mandir and IGNOU stations. This accomplishment is part of the 23.622 km Golden Line (Line-10), which will connect Aerocity to Tughlakabad via 15 stations.

Details of the Breakthrough:

  • TBM Specifications: The breakthrough was achieved by TBM DZ1124, a 97-meter-long Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine. Commissioned in December 2023, this was its first breakthrough and the fifth overall for the Phase-IV project’s 6.51 km Package DC-09, connecting Kishangarh to Saket G Block.
  • Tunnel Characteristics: The TBM constructed a 1,475-meter tunnel from Chhatarpur Mandir Station to IGNOU Station, installing 1,048 rings (each 1.4 meters) with an inner diameter of 5.8 meters. The tunnel was built at an average depth of 26 meters, with depths ranging between 15 and 36 meters.

This breakthrough is a testament to DMRC’s engineering capabilities, especially considering the geological challenges encountered. The successful completion of this tunnel enhances the progress of the Golden Line, aiming to improve connectivity between key areas in Delhi and benefiting commuters from both Delhi and Gurugram.
