Slab of Under-Construction Building Collapses at Puppalguda, Triggers Safety Concerns

Hyderabad: On Saturday, it is reported that the slab of a building that is still under construction in Puppalguda fell. There have been no reports of injuries or fatalities from the incident.

The event is said to have been caused by subpar building materials that were utilised to construct the structure at Alkapur, Road No. 14. The entire lane where the building is situated has been temporarily blocked by the authorities as a precaution.

Reports state that portions of the building’s slab became suspended close to high-tension wires, and attempts are in progress to remove the rubble securely. A tractor driver recently lost his life on the same construction site when his vehicle overturned

A major construction mishap occurred in Puppalguda, Hyderabad, as the slab of an under-construction building collapsed, raising serious concerns about construction quality and worker safety. The incident, which took place late in the evening, caused panic among laborers and nearby residents.

Details of the Incident

According to eyewitnesses, a portion of the concrete slab gave way suddenly, trapping several workers under the debris. Rescue teams, including local authorities and disaster response personnel, rushed to the site to clear the rubble and assist the injured.

Initial reports suggest that at least three workers sustained injuries, while others narrowly escaped. The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far.

A construction worker who witnessed the collapse stated, “We heard a loud cracking sound before the slab came crashing down. Some of us managed to run, but a few got trapped under the debris.”

Possible Causes and Investigation

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Preliminary assessments indicate poor construction quality, improper curing, and possible overloading of the structure as potential reasons. Officials are also looking into whether safety protocols were followed at the site.

A senior Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) official stated, “We will inspect the construction site thoroughly. If negligence is found, strict action will be taken against the builder and contractor responsible for the project.”

Safety Concerns and Builder Accountability

The incident has once again highlighted the lack of stringent monitoring in construction projects. Puppalguda, being a rapidly developing area with numerous high-rise constructions, has seen multiple safety violations in recent years. Experts believe that poor enforcement of building codes and cost-cutting by developers often lead to such dangerous mishaps.

Local residents and activists have demanded immediate action, with some calling for a third-party structural audit of ongoing projects in the area. Many also urged authorities to ensure strict adherence to safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Next Steps and Authorities’ Response

The municipal authorities have assured that stringent action will be taken against those found guilty of negligence. The affected site has been temporarily sealed, and further construction has been halted pending investigation results.

This incident serves as a wake-up call for stricter construction regulations, emphasizing the urgent need for builder accountability and worker safety in high-growth urban areas like Puppalguda.
