The Sivok-Rangpo rail project has received a breakthrough with the construction of an evacuation tunnel. This will be a big relief for the people of Sikkim as it will provide a safe passage for people in the event of an emergency. The tunnel is being constructed by the Indian Army and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The connection of an evacuation tunnel to the main tunnel is a significant accomplishment for the Sivok-Rangpo Rail Project. Project representatives from Ircon International Limited, Northeast Frontier Railway, and ABCI Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. were present when Tunnel No. 11, which is in the Kalimpong area of West Bengal, made its breakthrough. The Evacuation Tunnel is 960 metres long, whereas the Main Tunnel is 3232 metres long. New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), the most recent tunnelling technology, has been employed to address the groundmass’s vulnerabilities as the tunnel passes through difficult geological conditions. Engineers from India and beyond with exceptional experience are working on the project. The NH-10 and Main Tunnel No. 11 are connected by the Evacuation Tunnel.
