The Shimla Ropeway Project, poised to become the world’s second-largest urban ropeway, is set to commence construction on March 1, 2025. This ambitious initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, and enhance the region’s tourism infrastructure.
Project Overview
Spanning approximately 13.79 kilometers, the ropeway will feature 15 strategically located stations across three distinct routes:
- Monal Line: Connecting key urban centers.
- Deodar Line: Traversing areas rich in deodar forests.
- Apple Line: Passing through regions known for apple orchards.
The project’s estimated cost is ₹1,734.40 crore, with the state government contributing 20% and the remaining 80% financed by the New Development Bank.
Capacity and Infrastructure
Initially, the ropeway is designed to transport 2,000 passengers per hour, with plans to increase capacity to 6,000 passengers per hour by 2059. The system will utilize 660 trolleys operating across the 15 stations, ensuring efficient and continuous movement of commuters and tourists.
Environmental and Regulatory Approvals
All necessary documentation for forest clearance under the Forest Conservation Act has been submitted, and the New Development Bank’s fact-finding mission conducted an inspection in June 2024, granting its consent in July 2024.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond easing traffic congestion, the ropeway is expected to create direct employment for approximately 250 individuals and indirect employment opportunities for over 20,000 people. The project is anticipated to be operational by 2029, significantly boosting the local economy and tourism sector.
The Shimla Ropeway Project represents a transformative development in urban transportation for the region. By providing a sustainable and efficient transit solution, it aims to preserve Shimla’s natural beauty while accommodating the needs of residents and visitors.
