The heartbeat of Saurashtra is about to become much more rhythmic. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has approved infrastructure projects worth ₹470 crore, causing significant political and social impact in the city. This is more than just a routine administrative update; it is a high-stakes blueprint for a city about to take its next big step.
With civic polls scheduled for April 2026, the timing of this announcement is as strategic as the projects themselves. In its final high-powered session, the Standing Committee approved 106 of 115 proposals. These are more than just numbers on a ledger; they represent a fundamental shift in how Rajkot will look, breathe, and move in the coming years.

The Crown Jewel: Green Ring Road
The ambitious Green Ring Road project has received the most attention during this development boom. The initiative, with a revised budget of ₹220.82 crore, aims to address the city’s growing traffic issues. By transforming the connecting roads of the 150-foot Ring Road-2 into a sprawling four-lane corridor, the RMC is betting big on seamless connectivity and environmental sustainability.
This project involves more than just asphalt and concrete. It is intended to serve as a bypass for heavy vehicles, keeping inner city streets accessible to daily commuters. The state government’s push to increase the budget beyond the initial estimate demonstrates a clear commitment to transforming this into a long-term urban landmark rather than a quick fix.
Saurashtra’s First Sponge Park
Rajkot’s menu clearly includes innovation. The approval of a ₹28 crore Sponge Park in the Vavdi area demonstrates the city’s proactive approach to urban planning. This park, spanning 34,800 square meters, is designed to absorb and store rainwater, effectively mitigating the risk of urban flooding while recharging the groundwater table.
Aside from its ecological benefits, the Sponge Park will serve as a community hub. Yoga spaces, solar energy installations, flower gardens, and even a “water museum” are among the planned features. It’s a unique combination of environmental engineering and recreational luxury that promises to improve the lives of Ward No. 12 residents.
Smart Connectivity and Road Upgrades
Rajkot residents have long suffered from traffic congestion. To address this, the RMC has approved a new DP Road connecting Raiya village to the Smart City area, costing ₹18.58 crore. This alternative route is expected to relieve congestion on the West Zone’s heavily trafficked arterial roads.
Furthermore, the notoriously narrow and pothole-ridden New Ring Road is set to be significantly widened. The Standing Committee also prioritised safety by appointing consultants to conduct structural audits and routine maintenance on all overbridges and underpasses throughout the city, ensuring that infrastructure keeps up with the growing population.
Healthcare and Public Welfare
The RMC is also focused on the “human” aspect of infrastructure. New urban health centres are planned for the SRP Camp and Manharpur areas. These facilities seek to bring quality medical care to the doorsteps of newly developed neighbourhoods, thereby reducing the burden on central hospitals.
The historic Jubilee vegetable market is set to undergo a complete renovation, which will have a direct economic impact on the community. While traders will be temporarily relocated, the upgrade promises a more sanitary and organised environment for the thousands of small businesses and daily shoppers who make up the backbone of Rajkot’s local trade.
Safety First: Modern Fire Stations
The approval of a ₹30.16 crore fire station behind the Aji Dam traffic police station significantly improves public safety. This will not be your typical facility; it will house six fire tenders and feature a specialised workshop and control room.
The project also includes the construction of 64 residential flats for fire department personnel, which adds to the social welfare aspect. By providing housing directly above the station, the RMC ensures that its first responders are always prepared for immediate action, significantly improving emergency response times in the surrounding industrial and residential areas.
Standing Committee’s Final Push
Chairman Jaymin Thakar emphasised that, while the committee was eager to complete pending projects, they remained vigilant. Proposals worth ₹90 crore were rejected as “unreasonable.” This suggests that, while pre-election spending is high, there is still an effort to maintain fiscal discipline.
The flurry of foundation-stone ceremonies expected in the coming weeks will most likely pave the way for a contentious election season. As Rajkot prepares for the elections, these projects serve as the administration’s primary argument for a new mandate, promising a greener, faster, and more efficient future.
