Railways To Lay A 4000 Km Freight Corridor Across The Country

The railway will construct about 4,000 km of committed freight corridors (DFCs) to connect the industrial areas of the eastern and western parts of the country with South India. It will connect eastern and western parts of the country with South India through major ports of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. This information has been obtained from a document on these corridors.

The proposed DFCs are part of the railway’s next major infrastructure projects, including the 1,115-km East Coastal Corridor connecting Kharagpur (West Bengal) to Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), connecting the Bhusaval-Nagpur-Kharagpur-Dankuni (near Kolkata) route. Wala 1,673 km east-west corridor and 195 km Rajkharswan-Kalipahari-Andal (West Bengal) corridor. The third is a 975 km north-south sub corridor. This will connect the Vijayawada-Nagpur-Itarsi (Madhya Pradesh) route.

Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL) will soon start surveying these corridors. She will complete this process in a year. These corridors will provide connectivity to Paradip, Dhamra, Gopalpur ports of Odisha and Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Kakinada, Krishnapatnam, and Machilipatnam ports in Andhra Pradesh. These will speed up the movement of goods and increase the capacity of the railway network.
