Railways Plan 1.5 Km Double-Deck Bridge Over Yamuna In Prayagraj To Expand Delhi–Howrah Rail Capacity

The rhythmic clatter of trains crossing the Yamuna in Prayagraj is about to get a modern update. For more than 150 years, the iconic Old Naini Bridge has stood as a silent sentinel, connecting the city’s bustling North and South while also serving as a vital link on the Delhi-Howrah main line. However, time waits for no one, and especially no train. Indian Railways has officially launched a massive infrastructure upgrade: a cutting-edge 1.5-kilometer double-deck bridge designed to propel India’s rail capacity into the future.

Out with the Old, In with the Bold

The existing bridge, built in 1865, is a Victorian engineering marvel, but it is nearing the end of its useful life. With increased rail traffic through Sangam City, the old structure has become a bottleneck on one of India’s busiest transportation corridors. The proposed double-deck structure is more than just a replacement; it represents a complete redesign of how we travel across the river.

By stacking tracks on a single girder, railways will be able to handle two-way traffic on the same platform. This means fewer delays, shorter transit times, and a significant increase in operational efficiency for the North Central Railway (NCR).

Engineering a Maintenance-Free Future

This isn’t just about putting more steel on the skyline. The technical specifications for the new bridge read like a science fiction blueprint. To ensure longevity, engineers intend to use advanced silicone-based components and specialised sliding materials. What’s the goal? A structure that has been virtually maintenance-free for nearly three decades.

In a harsh environment, the bridge is designed to be “weather-proof” in every way. It is designed to withstand earthquakes measuring 7 to 8 on the Richter scale. Each pillar will be fitted with seismic arresters to absorb vibrations, ensuring that even a major tremor does not disrupt the flow of the Delhi-Howrah line.

IIT Roorkee Takes The Lead

Before the first stone is laid, the experts step in. A specialised team from IIT Roorkee will begin a detailed survey to determine the exact location for construction. Their report will serve as the basis for final approval from the Ministry of Railways.

According to initial plans, the new bridge will be strategically located between the current Yamuna bridge and the original 1865 structure. While the blueprint calls for two tracks, the Railways will most likely operate one in the first phase before adding the second as traffic demands approach the 2050 projections.

Eyes on Kumbh 2031

Timing is everything in Prayagraj. The city is the center of the world’s largest spiritual gathering, and the railways are working against a very specific timetable: the Kumbh Mela of 2031. The influx of millions of pilgrims necessitates a transportation system that can function under pressure.

Completing this bridge by the 2031 deadline is more than just a logistical goal; it is critical for crowd management and seamless connectivity. This bridge will be the city’s second structure with two railway tracks on a single girder, following the successful Daraganj-Jhunsi Ganga rail bridge.

Scaling for 2050 and Beyond

Why build for today if you can build for tomorrow? The designers are looking decades ahead, predicting a potential doubling of train services by 2050. To facilitate this, the bridge will have three dedicated inspection pathways, allowing safety teams to conduct checks without disrupting train traffic.

As the Delhi-Howrah route continues to be the backbone of Indian trade and travel, this 1.5-kilometer engineering feat will ensure that Prayagraj remains a gateway rather than a barrier. The future of Indian railways looks promising, with seismic arresters and double-deck efficiency.
