Railway places 1,253 stations on the radar for redevelopment

Based on a demand for better-improved passenger amenities, Indian Railways identified around 1,253 stations for renovation across the nation under the Adarsh Station Scheme. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of railways, announced that his department had developed a number of plans for modernising, expanding, and upgrading stations in both small and large cities. The facilities envisioned in the plan include the provision of a roof plaza or concourse wherever practical, where passengers and other users can wait comfortably and enjoy first-rate amenities like lounges, recreation areas, waiting areas, seating arrangements, shopping areas, restaurants/cafeterias, tapped potable drinking water points, restrooms, WiFi, ATMs, medical facilities, etc., integration with both sides of the city as far as is practical.

Additionally, they contained drop-off, pick-up, and parking areas for passengers as well as the separation of arrival and departure. Under the Major Upgradation Scheme, two Umbrella Works totaling $12,000 crore and $5,500 crore have been approved in the Budgets for 2021–22 and 2022–23, respectively, for the improvement of stations all across the Indian Railways.
