A 260-meter-long PSC bridge over National Expressway-4 near Kosamba, Surat, was completed in February 2025 as part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project. Constructed using the Balanced Cantilever Method, it prioritized safety and efficiency.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, India’s inaugural bullet train project, has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of a 260-meter pre-stressed concrete (PSC) bridge in Gujarat. This bridge, the fifth of its kind for the project, spans the under-construction National Expressway-4 near Kosamba in Surat district, effectively connecting the Surat and Bharuch bullet train stations.
Engineering and Construction Details
The newly completed bridge comprises 104 precast segments and features four spans configured as 50 meters + 80 meters + 80 meters + 50 meters. Constructed using the balanced cantilever method, this technique is particularly suited for longer spans and complex structures, ensuring minimal disruption to the ongoing expressway construction below.
Strategic Importance
Positioned over the Delhi-Mumbai National Expressway-4, one of India’s most crucial transportation arteries, this bridge plays a vital role in the seamless integration of the high-speed rail network with existing infrastructure. Its completion not only signifies progress in the bullet train project but also exemplifies advanced engineering practices in large-scale infrastructure development.
Progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project
The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has been steadfast in advancing the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. In addition to the recently completed 260-meter bridge, several other PSC bridges have been constructed:
- Fourth PSC Bridge: A 210-meter bridge located between the Anand and Ahmedabad stations, featuring a span configuration of 40 meters + 65 meters + 65 meters + 40 meters, was completed in January 2025.
- Third PSC Bridge: Another 210-meter bridge over National Highway-48 at Vaghaldhara village in Valsad district, with the same span configuration, was finalized earlier in January 2025.
- Second PSC Bridge: Completed in October 2024, this 210-meter bridge spans National Highway-48 near Sasodra village in Navsari district, also featuring the 40 meters + 65 meters + 65 meters + 40 meters configuration.
Future Outlook
The completion of these bridges marks substantial progress in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, which aims to revolutionize travel between the two major cities by reducing the journey time to approximately 3.5 hours. The Indian government plans to commence partial operations of this bullet train line by 2026.
reflecting its commitment to enhancing the nation’s transportation infrastructure through the adoption of advanced technologies and engineering methodologies. As the project advances, it is poised to set new benchmarks in India’s infrastructure development, showcasing the successful integration of cutting-edge engineering solutions in large-scale projects.
