Proposed Thiruvananthapuram new airport

There is a suggestion for a new airport in the Thiruvananthapuram city draught master plan-2040. The proposed plan, which will be presented to the corporate council, calls for the construction of a new airport close to the city’s outer ring road and suggests land purchase through land pooling. As part of the expansion of the current airport, it also suggests building an integrated terminal for both domestic and international services.

Given the problems with land acquisition for the current airport and the recent coastal erosion at Shanghumugham Beach, the idea assumes significance. The pitch for a new airport also signifies a change from a plan to build a runway across Shanghumugham beach close to the current airport as part of the capital region development project (CRDP)-II.

The plan for CRDP-II included the expansion of the current airport by building a new runway offshore that would connect to the current runway through a new taxi bay. On ground that had been reclaimed from the sea, the runway was proposed, and it was anticipated that it would solve land acquisition problems.

Coastal areas in the district have been pummelling by powerful waves over the past two to three years, and even the Shanghumugham Airport Road had to be shut down when a sizeable piece of the beach was lost.
