Prayagraj Airport Set for Major Expansion

Prayagraj Airport is growing quickly and will soon have six aerobridges, making it the first in Uttar Pradesh. The airport can now handle 2,000 passengers every day thanks to a major boost in capacity. The terminal’s capacity was increased from 350 to 850 people this year, improving the effectiveness of passenger handling. To improve operating ease and strengthen the airport’s overall infrastructure, a new taxiway has also been built to connect the main runway to the terminal.

Prayagraj Airport Set for Major Expansion to Boost Connectivity

Prayagraj Airport is set for a significant expansion, aimed at enhancing passenger capacity, improving infrastructure, and strengthening regional connectivity. The ambitious plan aligns with the government’s vision of modernizing aviation facilities across the country to accommodate growing air traffic and promote economic development in Uttar Pradesh.

Expansion Plans and Key Features

The proposed expansion of Prayagraj Airport includes several major upgrades to cater to increasing passenger traffic and improve overall operational efficiency. The key features of the project include:

  • New Terminal Building: A state-of-the-art terminal is planned to handle a higher passenger volume with modern amenities, including better seating arrangements, food courts, and duty-free shopping areas.
  • Extended Runway: The existing runway will be extended to accommodate larger aircraft, enabling the airport to handle long-haul flights and improve connectivity with more destinations.
  • Enhanced Parking and Apron Area: The expansion will include a larger apron and additional parking bays for aircraft, reducing congestion and allowing simultaneous flight operations.
  • Improved Passenger Facilities: More baggage handling systems, check-in counters, security checkpoints, and waiting lounges will be added to ensure a smoother travel experience.
  • New Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower: A modern ATC tower will be constructed to improve airspace management and enhance safety standards.

Boosting Regional Connectivity and Economy

Prayagraj, a city of historical and cultural significance, attracts a large number of visitors, especially during religious events like the Kumbh Mela, which sees millions of pilgrims from across the world. The expansion of the airport is expected to significantly boost tourism and business activities in the region.

Additionally, improved connectivity will benefit students, professionals, and businesses, making travel to and from Prayagraj more convenient. The upgraded airport will serve as a crucial link for trade, industry, and investments, contributing to the economic growth of Uttar Pradesh.

Government’s Vision and Investment

The expansion project is part of the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which focuses on improving regional air connectivity across India. The government, in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), is investing significantly in infrastructure to ensure seamless air travel for passengers.

Timeline and Future Prospects

Officials expect the expansion work to be completed within the next few years, following environmental clearances and land acquisition processes. Once operational, Prayagraj Airport will be well-equipped to handle increased air traffic, positioning it as a key aviation hub in Uttar Pradesh.

With these developments, Prayagraj is set to emerge as a major gateway for domestic and international travelers, further strengthening its role in India’s aviation landscape.
