PMG Reviews Mega Infrastructure Projects in Bihar, Odisha & West Bengal

The Project Monitoring Group (PMG) of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has reviewed 19 major infrastructure projects in Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha, examining 23 issues across 19 projects with a total investment exceeding INR 63,858 crore.

The review aimed to identify and address bottlenecks in projects related to Steel, Coal, Road Transport & Highways, Petroleum & Natural Gas, Railways, and Power. The Buxar Thermal Power Plant (1320 MW) project in Bihar was a key focus of discussions. The meeting, chaired by Principal Economic Advisor Shri Praveen.

Mahto, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the institutional framework for project monitoring and urged authorities to adopt a proactive approach in resolving pending issues. The DPIIT will continue to facilitate high-impact infrastructure projects, ensuring their timely completion and contributing to India’s economic growth.

Bihar Infrastructure Review

In Bihar, the PMG evaluated 101 projects with a cumulative investment of ₹3,45,217.68 crore. Key projects under scrutiny included Aimed at enhancing urban mobility in Patna. Intended to augment the state’s power generation capacity.​ Designed to improve rail connectivity and capacity.​

Odisha Infrastructure Review

In Odisha, the PMG examined 29 projects totaling an investment of ₹1.29 lakh crore. The review addressed 88 issues, resulting in the resolution of 12 issues across eight projects. Discussions emphasized the importance of adhering to project timelines and enhancing inter-agency coordination.

West Bengal Infrastructure Review

In West Bengal, 22 projects with a combined investment of ₹1,21,792.41 crore were reviewed. The session tackled 73 issues, successfully resolving five across five projects. Clear timelines were established for addressing the remaining challenges, underscoring the commitment to expedite project execution. ​

A significant project discussed during these reviews was the Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway, a pivotal initiative under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. This expressway aims to enhance regional connectivity across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, facilitating trade and freight movement, particularly benefiting industries reliant on the Kolkata and Haldia ports. ​

The PMG serves as a specialized body within DPIIT, tasked with expediting large-scale infrastructure projects by identifying and resolving implementation bottlenecks. By fostering collaboration among central ministries, state governments, and project proponents, the PMG ensures that projects adhere to established timelines and quality standards.

Outcomes and Future Directions

These review meetings have led to the resolution of critical issues, paving the way for accelerated infrastructure development in Eastern India.
