On Monday, the Building Permission Department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out an operation to prevent unauthorised construction activities in Kharadi and demolished a three-story building at survey number 3.
According to Building Permission Department executive engineer Shridhar Yeolekar, “The PMC conducted a drive against illegal construction at Kharadi and vacated a 15,000 square foot area.” The PMC has been hindered in its efforts to stop illegal building because of election-related obligations, but the campaign will pick back up after June 4.
“All civic departments initiated drives in the city prompted by the Kalyaninagar car crash,” PMC authorities said in response to the development. After taking action against rooftop hotels last week, the PMC will now step up its campaign against unauthorised buildings.
Civic authorities cleared out other unauthorised hoardings from the Wakad area later in the day. In a major action against unauthorized structures, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a demolition drive in Kharadi, targeting illegal constructions that had been built in violation of building regulations. The operation is part of PMC’s ongoing efforts to curb encroachments and ensure planned urban development in the rapidly growing locality.
Demolition Drive Details
The PMC’s anti-encroachment department, with the assistance of local police, deployed heavy machinery to bring down unauthorized structures, including illegally built residential and commercial units. Officials stated that notices had been issued to the property owners well in advance, warning them to remove the illegal structures voluntarily. However, after non-compliance, the civic body proceeded with the demolition.
The action primarily focused on illegal extensions, unauthorized commercial establishments, and unapproved constructions on government land. The Kharadi area, known for its booming real estate and IT hubs, has witnessed a surge in unauthorized developments, prompting stricter enforcement from municipal authorities.
PMC’s Stand on Unauthorized Constructions
Speaking on the demolition drive, a senior PMC official emphasized the corporation’s commitment to maintaining law and order in urban planning. He stated, “Illegal constructions not only violate building norms but also pose safety risks to residents. We will continue to take strict action against such encroachments to ensure planned and sustainable urban growth.”
The official also warned that further demolitions will be carried out if illegal construction activities persist. Residents and developers have been urged to obtain proper permissions before undertaking any construction projects.
Impact on Residents and Business Owners
The demolition has sparked mixed reactions among locals. While many welcomed the move, citing the need for better urban regulation, some affected property owners expressed concerns over sudden evictions and financial losses. Some residents have also demanded that PMC provide clear guidelines and streamline approval processes to prevent future illegal developments.
Future Actions and Urban Planning
PMC has indicated that similar enforcement drives will continue in other parts of Pune where illegal constructions have been reported. The civic body is also considering digital tracking and stricter monitoring mechanisms to prevent unauthorized developments before they take shape.
As Kharadi continues to expand as a major IT and residential hub, PMC’s crackdown on illegal constructions is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring organized urban development and infrastructure planning.
