PM Inaugurates Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in MP

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, reinforcing his commitment to energy self-sufficiency and green energy. The project will significantly reduce carbon emissions, supporting India’s mission to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070. Additionally, it will aid in water conservation by minimizing evaporation from the reservoir.

On December 25, 2024, coinciding with the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh. This significant event underscores India’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

Project Overview

The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project is situated on the backwaters of the Omkareshwar Dam on the Narmada River. With a planned total capacity of 600 megawatts (MW), it stands as India’s largest floating solar park. The project is being developed in phases, with the initial 278 MW already commissioned and operational. Once fully operational, the entire facility is expected to generate over 4,600 million units of clean energy over the next 25 years.

Environmental and Economic Impact

The implementation of this floating solar project is poised to make a substantial contribution to environmental conservation. It is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 230,000 tons annually, aligning with India’s broader strategy to combat climate change. Additionally,

the floating solar panels help in water conservation by minimizing evaporation from the reservoir. Economically, the project is expected to create numerous employment opportunities, bolster the local economy, and provide a reliable source of renewable energy to the region.

The project showcases innovative use of floating solar technology, which addresses land constraints associated with traditional solar farms. By utilizing the reservoir’s surface, the project preserves arable land and makes efficient use of existing water bodies.

The development has been executed by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN Limited, a Mini Ratna Schedule ‘A’ Central Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Power. The initial phase, comprising 90 MW, was successfully commissioned in August 2024, marking a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy sector.

Government Initiatives and Future Prospects

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the government’s dedication to expanding renewable energy infrastructure. The Omkareshwar project is a testament to this commitment, reflecting the nation’s resolve to harness clean energy sources.

Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, highlighted the project’s role in showcasing the scale and ambition of India’s clean energy goals. As the project progresses towards its full 600 MW capacity, it is set to become a cornerstone in India’s renewable energy landscape, inspiring similar initiatives across the country.

In summary, the inauguration of the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project marks a pivotal advancement in India’s pursuit of sustainable development. By integrating innovative technology with environmental stewardship, the project not only contributes to the nation’s energy security but also exemplifies a harmonious balance between progress and ecological preservation.
