CCMC to Fast-Track Construction of Twin Bus Terminus at Ukkadam: A New Era for Coimbatore’s Transit

Commuters in Coimbatore have reason to cheer as the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) accelerates the construction of the much-anticipated Ukkadam twin bus terminus. With a focus on modern infrastructure and seamless connectivity, the project is set to transform the city’s transport landscape by February 2026.

In this blog, we explore the key highlights of the project, the innovative construction methods being used, and what this means for the future of travel in the Manchester of South India.

As the city gears up for the grand inauguration this spring, the Ukkadam twin bus terminus stands as a testament to Coimbatore’s rapid urban evolution.

Why the Ukkadam Twin Bus Terminus is a Game-Changer

The Ukkadam bus stand has long been a vital hub for passengers traveling toward Pollachi, Udumalpet, Palani, and various parts of Kerala. However, the construction of the Ukkadam-Aathupalam flyover necessitated the demolition of parts of the original structure.

To address the growing traffic demands, the CCMC, under the guidance of Chief Minister MK Stalin, envisioned a twin-terminal system. This ₹21.55 crore project isn’t just a replacement; it’s a modernization effort designed to handle up to 80 buses simultaneously across 58 bus bays.

Terminal Layout at a Glance:

Terminal II: Situated at the existing functional bus stand site, catering to south-bound and mofussil services.

Terminal I: Located opposite the Ukkadam police station (formerly the fish market), dedicated primarily to north-bound and town buses.

Fast-Tracking Success with Pre-Assembled Technology

One of the most impressive aspects of this development is the speed of construction. CCMC Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran recently highlighted that the corporation is using pre-assembled steel structures.

By fabricating these massive truss structures off-site and installing them directly at the location, the CCMC has bypassed many traditional construction delays. Currently, with nearly 50% of the work completed, the project is on a “war footing” to meet its February-March 2026 deadline.

Passenger-Centric Amenities

The new terminus isn’t just about bus bays; it’s about passenger experience. The redevelopment includes:

  • Modern Comforts: Seating for 60+ passengers, dedicated mother-care (feeding) rooms, and clean restroom facilities.
  • Smart Features: Free Wi-Fi, mobile charging stations, and accessible infrastructure for differently-abled commuters.
  • Security: A network of 30 CCTV cameras linked to a dedicated emergency monitoring center.
  • Commercial Hub: Food courts and retail spaces to serve the thousands of daily commuters.

Integration with Coimbatore Metro

The twin bus terminus is strategically designed to complement the upcoming Coimbatore Metro Rail. Ukkadam is slated to be a central hub where multiple metro corridors intersect. The new bus terminals are being built with the “future of mobility” in mind, ensuring that switching between bus and metro services will be seamless for the public.
