Nvidia rides AI wave to record $14 billion profit, announces yearly chip releases

The market leader in graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia, recently reported a whopping $14 billion profit for the quarter, mostly due to the spike in demand for its chips that power artificial intelligence. CEO Jensen Huang declared that the company will stop releasing new chip architectures every two years and instead release them annually, a major acceleration from its previous two-year cycle, signalling its intent to dominate the rapidly expanding AI landscape.

During the Q1 2025 earnings call, Huang said, “We’re on a one-year rhythm,” confirming rumours in the industry that the codenamed “Rubin,” the replacement for the current Blackwell architecture, will be released in 2025. This would mean that the much awaited R100 AI GPU would launch within the year.

This faster release schedule covers the whole range of Nvidia products, not just chips with an AI focus. Huang confirmed, “We’re going to take them all forward at a very fast clip.” “New CPUs, new GPUs, new networking NICs, new switches… a mountain of chips are coming.”

This bold approach is being taken by Nvidia at a time when demand for its H100 AI GPUs is higher than ever thanks to the industries’ quick adoption of generative AI technologies. Consumers are lining up to get their hands on these potent chips—some are placing orders for more than 100,000 pieces. Notably, by the end of the year, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, hopes to have over 350,000 H100 GPUs in use.

With a question like “Do you want to be the company delivering groundbreaking AI, or the company, you know, delivering 0.3 percent better?” Huang emphasised the strategic imperative for businesses to stay ahead in the AI race.

The automotive industry is expected to grow to be Nvidia’s “largest enterprise vertical within data centre this year,” the company’s CFO continued, pointing to Tesla’s acquisition of 35,000 H100 GPUs for its autonomous driving initiative.

Nvidia has posted a record-breaking $14 billion profit in its latest quarter, driven by explosive demand for AI chips. The company, which dominates the AI and data center GPU market, has benefited immensely from the global surge in artificial intelligence development, fueling growth in cloud computing, machine learning, and autonomous systems.

AI Boom Propels Nvidia’s Success

  • Nvidia’s data center revenue skyrocketed, thanks to increasing demand for its H100 GPUs, widely used in AI applications like ChatGPT and enterprise AI models.
  • The company’s stock has surged, solidifying its position as one of the most valuable tech firms.
  • CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that AI is reshaping industries, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime technological shift.

New Strategy: Annual Chip Releases

  • Nvidia has announced plans to release new AI chips every year, accelerating innovation to stay ahead of rivals like AMD and Intel.
  • The upcoming Blackwell GPU architecture, expected in 2025, will offer higher performance and efficiency, catering to AI advancements.

With AI investments soaring, Nvidia’s strategy positions it as a key driver of the AI revolution, setting new standards for AI hardware and computing power.
