NPG Reviews 11 Infrastructure Projects Under PM GatiShakti

The Network Planning Group (NPG) reviewed eleven infrastructure projects under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, aiming to enhance multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency. The projects include the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ 4-lane NH from Kishanganj-Bahadurganj Road Project.

the Northern Portion of Hyderabad Regional Ring Road Expressway, the six-lane connectivity road from Sabbavaram to Sheelanagar Junction in Visakhapatnam Andhra Pradesh, the Jaipur Northern Ring Road, the upgradation of the Limbdi-Dhrangadhra section.

Gujarat, the Zirakpur Bypass, the New Broad Gauge Line from Bhagalpur to Jamalpur, the Doubling line between Aurangabad-Parbhani stations, the National Knowledge Network Phase-II, and the MoHUA Metro Project-GIFT City to GIFT.

These projects aim to improve last-mile connectivity, intermodal coordination, and travel efficiency, driving socio-economic benefits across regions. The projects include flyovers, major bridges, service roads, underpasses, and improved accessibility.

They also aim to reduce congestion and improve trade connectivity between Bihar and West Bengal. The NPG also reviewed the National Knowledge Network Phase-II, which strengthens the backbone of national research, education, and e-Governance infrastructure.

The MoHUA Metro Project-GIFT City is designed to enhance urban mobility for the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) in Gujarat, yielding significant socio-economic benefits such as reduced travel time, lower fuel consumption, and a substantial drop in vehicular emissions and accidents.

The Network Planning Group (NPG), established under the PM GatiShakti initiative, recently evaluated 11 significant infrastructure projects across various sectors, including railways, roads, urban development, and oil and gas. This assessment aligns with the initiative’s goal to enhance integrated infrastructure planning and reduce logistics costs.

  • Railways: Three projects were reviewed, focusing on new rail lines and the expansion of existing networks to improve freight and passenger connectivity.
  • Road Transport and Highways: Three projects aimed at upgrading national highways and constructing bypasses to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance regional connectivity.
  • Urban Development: Two projects centered on metro rail expansions and urban infrastructure enhancements to support urban mobility and sustainable development.
  • Oil and Gas: Three projects involved the development of pipelines and related infrastructure to ensure efficient energy distribution.

Significance of the Evaluations:

The NPG’s assessments are crucial for ensuring that these projects adhere to the principles of integrated planning outlined in the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP). By leveraging the NMP’s geospatial platform, which includes over 1,600 data layers encompassing land, ports, forests, and highways, the NPG facilitates efficient project planning and design.

Impact on Infrastructure Development:

Since its inception in October 2021, the PM GatiShakti initiative has recommended 228 infrastructure projects worth ₹15.89 lakh crore for approval. These projects span roads, railways, urban development, and oil and gas sectors, with roads leading with 108 projects, followed by 85 for railways.

Role of the Network Planning Group (NPG):

The NPG meets bi-weekly to review infrastructure projects, ensuring multi-modal connectivity and coordination with local development. Projects over ₹500 crore require NPG approval before progressing to the finance ministry and Cabinet clearance.

This process ensures that projects are not only economically viable but also contribute to the holistic development of the nation’s infrastructure. The recent evaluation of 11 infrastructure projects by the NPG underlines the government’s commitment to integrated and efficient infrastructure development.

By focusing on multi-modal connectivity and synchronized project implementation, the PM GatiShakti initiative aims to reduce logistics costs, enhance economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for citizens.
