NHSRCL invites bids for 7-km undersea tunnel

As a result of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai high speed rail (bullet) train project, India will acquire its first underwater tunnel. The project’s implementer, NHSRCL, has issued an invitation for bids for a tunnel that will be around 21 km long, including a 7 km undersea tube. The tunnel will be constructed in Maharashtra’s.

Thane Creek between the underground stations at Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata. Before this, it was determined that the projected underwater tunnel across the Yamuna for the Delhi-Mumbai Rapid Rail Transit project was not possible. A plan to construct a Brahmaputra tunnel for both trains and cars is also being developed by the road and railway ministries.

To accommodate double track for up and down trains, the tunnel at Thane Creek will be a single tube. Along with the underground location, the package also includes the construction of 39 equipment rooms at 37 different locations. The deepest construction point will be 114 metres below the Parsik hill at Shilphata, and the tunnel will be between 25 and 65 metres below ground level. Tunnel boring machines with cutter heads of 13.1 metres in diameter will be employed for this project.
