The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor requires the building of a 21 km long tunnel, and the National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) has issued a request for proposals.

Seven kilometres of this will be underwater. Between the underground station at the Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shil phata in the Thane district, the tunnel would be built.

The New Austrian Tunnelling Method and a tunnel boring machine will be used to construct the tunnel (NATM).

Thane Creek’s underwater tunnel will be the nation’s first operational underwater tunnel.
