NHAI Prioritizes Service Roads to Decongest Trichy-Thanjavur Highway

The Trichy-Thanjavur national highway (NH), which is infamous for its deadly collisions, would see the development of service roads take precedence over an elevated corridor, according to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The more costly elevated corridor option has been canceled by NHAI due to public resistance.

Since the elevated road concept is no longer on the table, NHAI and the state government must work together in concert to complete the service road project. The 14.4-kilometer section between Palpannai and Thuvakudi has been devoid of service roads for almost ten years, yet despite this, the area has seen substantial investments, including the construction of new business complexes on both sides of the highway. Some traders have proposed an elevated corridor as a way to prevent land acquisition and property loss, while residents are calling for service roads.
