NHAI may miss highway construction target for FY23

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is likely to miss its target of constructing 27km of highways per day in the financial year 2022-23. This is due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdown, which has led to a slowdown in construction activity.

The NHAI had set a target of constructing 9,000km of highways in the financial year 2021-22, but it is now estimated that only 7,000-8,000km will be constructed. The target for the financial year 2022-23 was set at 10,000km, but it is now looking unlikely that this will be achieved.

The slowdown in construction activity will have a knock-on effect on the NHAI’s plans to award contracts for the construction of another 20,000km of highways over the next two years. This could delay the government’s ambitious plans to expand the country’s highway network.
