NHAI Invites Bids for ₹816 Crore NH-87 Four-Laning Project in Tamil Nadu

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited bids for the four-laning of National Highway 87 (NH-87) in Tamil Nadu. The project, valued at ₹816 crore, is aimed at enhancing road infrastructure, easing traffic congestion, and boosting connectivity in the region. This initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen the national highway network and facilitate economic development.

Project Details

The NH-87 four-laning project will cover a significant stretch, improving road quality and increasing the highway’s capacity to handle vehicular movement. The scope of work includes the construction of four lanes, upgrading existing road infrastructure, building service roads, flyovers, culverts, and pedestrian crossings to enhance safety and efficiency.

The project is expected to be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), which allows for a combination of public and private sector participation. Under this model, the government and the private developer share the financial burden, reducing risks and ensuring efficient project execution.

Strategic Importance

The expansion of NH-87 is crucial for Tamil Nadu’s transportation network. The project is expected to:

  • Improve connectivity between key cities and industrial hubs.
  • Facilitate faster movement of goods and passengers.
  • Reduce travel time and fuel consumption.
  • Enhance road safety and reduce accident rates.

With Tamil Nadu being a significant contributor to India’s economy, better road infrastructure is essential for industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and trade.

Government’s Infrastructure Push

The NH-87 project aligns with the Government of India’s emphasis on infrastructure development. Under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a flagship highway development program, several key projects are being undertaken to modernize India’s road network. The government has been consistently increasing budgetary allocations for highway projects, recognizing their impact on economic growth.

Timeline and Bidding Process

The bidding process for the NH-87 four-laning project has commenced, with interested companies required to submit their proposals within the specified timeframe. The selection will be based on technical qualifications, financial viability, and project execution capabilities.

Once awarded, the project is expected to be completed within a stipulated timeline, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic. The construction phase will generate employment opportunities, providing a boost to the local economy.

Challenges and Expectations

While the project presents significant benefits, potential challenges include land acquisition, environmental clearances, and logistical constraints. However, NHAI has been proactive in addressing these issues through streamlined policies and stakeholder engagement.

The success of this project will serve as a model for future highway expansions, demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and improving road networks across India.
