In order to increase traffic safety on national highways utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) based solutions, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Delhi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi, and the National roads Authority of India (NHAI) have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance road safety on national roads through the use of AI-based solutions.
In order to meet the needs for increased safety, IIIT Delhi will also carry out a gap analysis comparing survey results with the specifications listed in the most recent codal regulations for high-speed corridors and approved road signage plans.
Through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and geographic information systems (GIS), the National Highway Traffic Safety Initiative (NHAI) seeks to improve road safety for all users of national highway.
NHAI and IIIT Delhi Collaborate to Enhance Road Safety with AI
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has partnered with Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT Delhi) to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies for improving road safety and traffic management. This collaboration aims to address accident prevention, traffic flow optimization, and real-time monitoring, making India’s highways safer and more efficient.
AI-Driven Road Safety Solutions
The partnership will focus on developing AI-powered systems to analyze highway conditions, identify risks, and provide actionable insights. Key initiatives include:
- Automated Traffic Monitoring – AI-driven cameras and sensors will be deployed to detect violations, monitor congestion, and assess road conditions in real time.
- Accident Prediction & Prevention – Machine learning models will analyze historical accident data to identify high-risk zones and suggest preventive measures.
- AI-Based Incident Detection – Advanced image processing will enable automatic detection of stalled vehicles, accidents, and debris, allowing for quick emergency response.
- Smart Road Infrastructure Management – AI tools will help predict maintenance requirements for highways, ensuring timely repairs and reducing disruptions.
Enhancing Real-Time Decision Making
By integrating AI with highway surveillance systems, NHAI aims to provide real-time alerts to traffic authorities and commuters. This will enable:
- Faster response times to accidents and breakdowns
- Dynamic traffic management to reduce congestion
- Improved lane discipline and enforcement of speed limits
IIIT Delhi’s expertise in AI, data analytics, and computer vision will drive innovation in highway monitoring and safety enhancement strategies.
Impact on Road Safety and Traffic Management
With over 150,000 road accident fatalities annually in India, this initiative is expected to significantly reduce accidents and improve commuter safety. The collaboration will:
- Minimize human errors in traffic monitoring
- Enhance road infrastructure efficiency
- Support policy decisions through AI-driven insights
