New methanol-ready subsea construction vessel to sport Corvus’ energy storage system

The new ESCV will be the first ship to carry out extensive construction work in both offshore wind and subsea environments with net zero emissions, and it will run on green methanol and batteries; Ref: REM Offshore

Corvus Energy, a Norwegian company that specialises in marine battery and fuel cell systems, has been chosen to supply energy storage systems (ESS) for a new energy subsea construction vessel (ESCV) that will be constructed for Norwegian shipowner REM Offshore.

Corvus Energy secured a contract with HAF Power Solutions (HPS) to supply its ESS for the ESCV after Rem Offshore hired Myklebust Verft for the construction of the vessel, which is said to be the first of its kind to perform heavy construction work in both offshore wind and subsea arenas with net zero emissions.

The ship is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2026, even though the energy storage system for the Norwegian player is expected to be delivered in the first part of that year. A second vessel’s equipment delivery option is included in Corvus’ contract award.

Chief Commercial Officer of Rem Offshore, Ronny Pål Kvalsvik, said: “This project demonstrates that we are prepared to advance zero-emission offshore activities. The ship will run on green fuels in addition to being prepared for methanol. Its cutting-edge technology and thoughtful design will give us maximum redundancy, flexibility, and efficiency.

“We hope to contribute to a greener future for the marine industry and achieve notable gains in energy usage and operating cost reductions. To optimise the system, a larger capacity of batteries is required. Batteries are even more crucial when utilising alternative fuels like methanol since dual-fuel engines respond slowly.
