New methanol-ready subsea construction vessel to sport Corvus’ energy storage system

Corvus Energy, a Norwegian company that specialises in marine battery and fuel cell systems, has been chosen to supply energy storage systems (ESS) for a new energy subsea construction vessel (ESCV) that will be constructed for Norwegian shipowner REM Offshore.

Corvus Energy secured a contract with HAF Power Solutions (HPS) to supply its ESS for the ESCV after Rem Offshore Myklebust Verft for the construction of the vessel, which is said to be the first of its kind to perform heavy construction work in both offshore wind and subsea arenas with net zero emissions.

The ship is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2026, even though the energy storage system for the Norwegian player is expected to be delivered in the first part of that year. A second vessel’s equipment delivery option is included in Corvus’ contract award.

Chief Commercial Officer of Rem Offshore, Ronny Pål Kvalsvik, said: “This project demonstrates that we are prepared to advance zero-emission offshore activities. The ship will run on green fuels in addition to being prepared for methanol. Its cutting-edge technology and thoughtful design will give us maximum redundancy, flexibility, and efficiency.

“We hope to contribute to a greener future for the marine industry and achieve notable gains in energy usage and operating cost reductions. To optimise the system, a larger capacity of batteries is required. Batteries are even more crucial when utilising alternative fuels like methanol since dual-fuel engines respond slowly.

In a significant advancement toward sustainable maritime operations, REM Offshore is set to introduce an Energy Subsea Construction Vessel (ESCV) equipped with dual-fuel methanol engines and a 1.7 MW battery system supplied by Corvus Energy. This vessel represents a pioneering step in achieving net-zero emissions within the subsea construction sector.

Vessel Design and Capabilities

The ESCV, based on the ST-245 design, is tailored for heavy construction tasks in both offshore wind and subsea environments. Its dual-fuel methanol engines, complemented by Corvus Energy’s 1.7 MW battery system, enable operations on green methanol.

significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The integration of advanced energy storage facilitates functions such as spinning reserve, peak shaving, and energy regeneration from offshore lifting equipment, optimizing energy consumption and operational efficiency.

Strategic Collaborations

REM Offshore’s collaboration with HAF Power Solutions (HPS) and Corvus Energy underscores a commitment to sustainable maritime solutions. HPS’s selection of Corvus Energy’s storage system aligns with REM Offshore’s vision of utilizing local suppliers to promote a more sustainable and efficient maritime industry.

The proximity of key partners—design firm Skipsteknisk and integrator HPS in Ålesund, and the vessel’s construction at Myklebust Verft in Gursken—has facilitated close collaboration throughout the project planning phase.

Project Timeline and Future Prospects

The energy storage system is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2026, with the ESCV expected to commence operations in the latter half of the same year. The contract includes an option for equipment deliveries for a second vessel, indicating REM Offshore’s strategic approach to fleet expansion with a focus on sustainability.

Implications for the Maritime Industry

The introduction of this methanol-ready ESCV signifies a transformative shift in subsea construction, demonstrating the feasibility of integrating alternative fuels and advanced energy storage systems. This initiative not only aligns with global decarbonization goals but also sets a precedent for future vessel designs aiming for net-zero emissions. The project’s emphasis on local collaboration and technological innovation reflects a holistic approach to sustainable development in the maritime sector.

In summary, REM Offshore’s methanol-ready subsea construction vessel, featuring Corvus Energy’s storage system, marks a pivotal advancement in sustainable maritime operations. This project exemplifies the integration of alternative fuels and energy-efficient technologies, paving the way for a greener future in subsea construction.
