To promote improved telecom service delivery, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has entrusted telecom consumers and infrastructure host communities to protect telecom infrastructure in their domain.
Prof. Umar Danbatta, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO), made the request at the second Village Square Dialogue (VSD), one of the Commission’s consumer outreach programmes.
While asking for consumers’ help in supporting the Commission’s efforts to improve telecoms service delivery in their communities, the EVC stated that a community must protect telecom infrastructure in its vicinity by allowing service providers’ technical staff to install equipment and perform maintenance or repairs on site.
Danbatta further urged residents of the respective communities to protect telecoms infrastructure by notifying service providers of any active road construction works by companies or government agencies, in order to avoid service disruptions caused by damaged infrastructure.
The EVC went on to say that protecting telecom infrastructure is critical in any community because the ability to connect and communicate is critical to human survival, given its importance in improving businesses, government services, education, communities, and families’ ability to share information through seamless connections.
He pointed out that technological advancements have made it easier for people to access learning opportunities outside of the classroom. “Today, you only need a computer, smartphone, and an Internet connection to do so many things,” he explained. “Telecom infrastructure in your communities provides the crucial facilities that facilitate Internet access to these devices, and you are obliged to maintain the infrastructure.”
Vandalism of telecom infrastructure, according to Danbatta, has a significant negative impact on the community because it reduces coverage area, resulting in ‘dead spots’ on the network, which results in poor quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) by consumers, as well as discouraging operators from investing in network expansion.
