Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway Fully Operational by Mid-March

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has completed the final 76-km stretch of the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway, which will be open to vehicles by mid-March. The project, initiated by Devendra Fadnavis, aims to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur.

The Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, officially known as the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, is set to become fully operational by mid-March 2025, marking a significant milestone in Maharashtra’s infrastructure development.

This 701-kilometer six-lane expressway will substantially reduce travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from the current 16 hours to approximately 8 hours, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth across the state.

Project Overview

Initiated in 2015 under the leadership of then-Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Samruddhi Expressway aims to bolster economic development by providing a high-speed corridor connecting Maharashtra’s capital, Mumbai, with its third-largest city, Nagpur. The project was undertaken by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and has been executed in multiple phases.

Phased Implementation

The expressway’s construction was divided into 16 packages, with work commencing in February 2019. The project has seen phased openings:

  • December 2022: The initial 520 kilometers from Nagpur to Shirdi were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • May 2023: A subsequent 105-kilometer stretch from Shirdi to Bharvir was opened by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
  • March 2024: An additional 25 kilometers between Bharvir and Igatpuri became operational.

As of now, 625 kilometers of the expressway are in use, extending from Nagpur to Igatpuri near Nashik. The final 76-kilometer segment, connecting Igatpuri to Amane in Thane district, has been completed and is slated for public use by mid-March 2025.

Designed for high-speed travel, the expressway permits speeds up to 150 km/h. It incorporates advanced safety features, including wildlife underpasses, pedestrian crossings, and flyovers, ensuring the protection of both drivers and animals. The

infrastructure includes 65 flyovers, 24 interchanges, six tunnels, and dedicated underpasses for vehicles and pedestrians. Additionally, the expressway is equipped with 30 fuel stations and 21 emergency response vehicles to ensure prompt assistance for travelers.

Economic and Social Impact

The completion of the Samruddhi Expressway is anticipated to have a transformative impact on Maharashtra’s economy

  • Reduced Travel Time: The expressway will halve the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur, making it more convenient for commuters and boosting trade and tourism.
  • Economic Development: Enhanced connectivity is expected to attract investments, promote industrial growth, and create employment opportunities in regions along the expressway.
  • Real Estate Growth: Improved accessibility is likely to spur real estate development in adjacent areas, leading to urbanization and infrastructure improvements.

Future Connectivity

At Amane, the expressway will connect to the under-construction Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, facilitating smoother travel between the Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Gujarat. Currently, a temporary arrangement links the Mumbai-Nashik Highway with the Samruddhi Expressway, but the complete Bhiwandi extension is expected to enhance connectivity further.

The full operationalization of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway represents a landmark achievement in Maharashtra’s infrastructure landscape. By significantly reducing travel time and enhancing safety, the expressway is poised to drive economic growth.

improve regional connectivity, and uplift the socio-economic profile of the areas it traverses. As the final stretch opens to the public in mid-March 2025, Maharashtra stands on the cusp of a new era in transportation and development.
