The four-fold construction of the Virar-Dahanu road and rail line has been delayed for more than two years and is now accelerating. In addition to the completion of the design and layout of the project, the construction of bridges along the route has also begun.
The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), which is implementing the project, said earlier that the land acquisition for the project will be completed by the end of 2019, and the construction of the third and fourth railway lines will be completed around the middle of 2023. However, due to land acquisition and blockade issues, the project was postponed.
Now, although almost 70% of the land acquisition has been completed, officials say that earthworks have also been tendered, including related general electrification and overhead equipment (OHE) projects, as well as stations and other construction-related projects.
The quadrupling of the Virar-Dahanu section (electrified dual track) will allow the train to travel at a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour.
Officials said that nearly 20% of the quadrupled work has been completed. “The project’s proposed target completion date is March 2024. A total of 86 new bridges are planned throughout the process. Contracts have been signed for the construction of bridges on all sections between stations,” an official said.
Eight new stations and several new structures, such as station buildings on Virar, Vaitarna, Saphale, Kelve Road, Palghar, Umroli, Boisar, and Wangaon-Dahanu Road, may appear.
Hitesh Save of Dahanu Vaitarna Pravasi Sevabhavi Sanstha recently wrote to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, saying: “There are still some land acquisitions that have not been completed. However, the work is in full swing and we are satisfied with the current progress.”
