Versova and Vasai-Virar are 43 miles apart, and the Union Transport Ministry intends to develop the 43 km long coastal route between them as part of the ongoing 1 lakh crore Delhi-Mumbai expressway project. Nitin Gadkari, the minister of transport, urged the state government to free up some land parcels for its construction activities and waive the GST and royalty on cement in order to speed up the early completion of this important project. He emphasised the necessity of creating seamless connection between Mumbai and Delhi via a network of coastal roads and water links that extends as far as Vasai-Virar and beyond.
The sea link is planned to be built with connectors at Charkop, Uttan, Vasai, and Virar, according to the pre-feasibility study. Versova and Virar will be connected by a 4+4 lane main bridge with 3+3 lane connectors at each of these four places. The coastal road, the Bandra-Worli sea connection, the Bandra-Versova sea link, and the Virar extension are all part of the project that would shorten the three-hour drive from Nariman Point in south Mumbai to Virar to almost 60 kilometres. He also provided information on the intentions to construct a direct road link between Mumbai and Bangalore using the Pune ring road and Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s Westerly Bypass, for which a road alignment design has already been produced.
