The Mohali Administration has filed a formal complaint (FIR) against two individuals from Jhampur village and advised action against nine more from Teera village due to the illegal constructions that are occurring in the areas that border Chandigarh.
According to Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain, new construction is prohibited in the area without prior consent due to the Punjab New Capital (Periphery) Control Act.
She said that prompt action against the illegal buildings has been requested from the local authorities and the GMADA (beyond the bounds of MC). In addition, district officials of the Rural Development and Panchayat Department have been urged to keep an eye on any unauthorised development in the rural belt, especially on land that falls within Lal Dora.

This move is part of the authorities’ strict enforcement of urban planning regulations to curb unregulated developments that pose safety and environmental risks.
Crackdown on Unauthorized Constructions

- During a recent survey, officials found that two individuals had carried out unauthorized construction without obtaining the necessary approvals from the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA).
- As a result, FIRs were lodged under relevant sections of the Punjab Regional and Town Planning Act, sending a strong message against non-compliance.
Why Illegal Construction is a Concern

- Encroachment Issues – Illegal buildings hinder planned development, leading to traffic congestion and overburdened public utilities.
- Environmental Impact – Unregulated construction often results in damage to green spaces and water bodies, affecting the city’s ecological balance.
Administration’s Next Steps
- Regular Monitoring – Teams will continue to inspect and identify unauthorized structures.
- Demolition Drives – Strict action, including demolition of illegal buildings, will be carried out.
- Public Awareness Campaigns – The administration plans to educate residents and builders on the importance of obtaining legal approvals before construction.
