Since its June 2015 start, India’s urban growth has been led by the Smart Cities Mission, whose creative projects and project selection process are driven by competition. Every one of the 100 cities included in the Mission has created special initiatives that improve urban administration and accomplish revolutionary objectives.
As of July 3, 2024, a total of ₹1,44,237 crore had been spent on 7,188 projects across 100 cities, or 90% of the total. At a cost of ₹19,926 crore, the remaining 830 projects are nearing completion. 93% of the ₹48,000 crore funding allotted by the Government of India (GOI) has been used by the cities. 74 cities have received full financial support from the Government of India.
The GOI has extended the Mission time until March 31, 2025, without incurring additional costs, in order to finish the remaining projects, due to various delays. It is anticipated that all ongoing initiatives will be completed by the revised date.
The Government of India has extended the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) deadline to March 31, 2025, allowing for the completion of remaining projects.
Background of the Smart Cities Mission
Launched in June 2015, the SCM aimed to develop 100 cities with enhanced infrastructure and sustainable environments through smart solutions. The mission’s objectives included improving urban living standards, promoting sustainable development, and fostering inclusive growth. Initially slated for completion by 2020, the mission has undergone multiple extensions to accommodate project timelines.
Progress and Rationale for Extension
As of July 2024, approximately 90% of the projects under the SCM have been completed, accounting for investments totaling ₹1,44,237 crore. The remaining 10% of projects are in advanced stages but have faced delays due to various on-ground challenges. In response to requests from several states and urban local bodies for additional time to finalize these initiatives, the government has granted an extension until March 31, 2025
The extension will not involve any additional funding beyond the already approved financial allocations under the mission. The total budget for the SCM stands at ₹48,000 crore, with 97% of the funds already released by the Union government and 93% utilized by the cities.
Significance of the Extension
This extension underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the SCM’s objectives. By providing additional time, the government aims to overcome implementation challenges and deliver projects that enhance the quality of urban life, promote sustainable development, and improve the ease of living for residents across the participating cities.
In conclusion, the extension of the Smart Cities Mission to March 31, 2025, reflects the government’s dedication to fostering urban transformation and addressing the evolving needs of India’s urban population.
