Ministry Details Bridge Construction Over Brahmaputra River
Under the direction of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, has been providing updates on the building of bridges over the Brahmaputra River, which is a segment of National Waterway-2. The river, which runs 891 km from Dhubri to Sadia and was named National Waterway-2 in September 1988, is now being crossed by five bridges that are presently being built.

In order to assure compliance with essential standards for horizontal and vertical clearances, which are vital for safe passage, any bridge building across a National Waterway requires a “No Objection Certificate” (NoC) from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). According to IWAI standards, the Brahmaputra River section between Dhubri and Dibrugarh is categorised as a Class-VII waterway, meaning that a minimum of 10 meters must separate piers vertically and a minimum of 100 meters must separate them horizontally. A minimum horizontal clearance of 80 meters and a minimum vertical clearance of 8 meters are required for the Class-V waterway that runs from Dibrugarh to Sadia.
