A forest fire near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir triggered multiple landmine explosions, causing panic among security forces and residents in the area. The incident, which occurred in a heavily militarized zone, highlights the volatile nature of the region, where minefields are strategically placed for border security.
Fire Triggers Explosions in Forward Areas
According to officials, the fire broke out in a forested area near the LoC, rapidly spreading due to dry conditions and strong winds. As the flames advanced towards military positions, several anti-personnel and anti-tank mines planted along the border exploded due to the extreme heat.
The explosions sent plumes of smoke into the air, with loud blasts heard in nearby villages. The Army and local firefighting teams were rushed to the spot to contain the blaze and prevent further detonations.
No Casualties, But High Alert in the Region
Thankfully, there were no reports of casualties among civilians or security personnel. However, the incident has put border forces on high alert, as forest fires can compromise defense operations by exposing strategic positions and damaging security infrastructure.
A senior security official stated, “The LoC is lined with minefields as part of security measures. When a fire reaches these areas, it can lead to uncontrolled explosions, posing risks to troops and nearby communities.”
Frequent Occurrence Along LoC
Such incidents are not uncommon along the LoC, especially during summer and dry seasons. Authorities have urged local residents to remain cautious and have intensified fire monitoring efforts in vulnerable areas.
