Maharashtra’s iconic red buses are receiving a massive, high-tech makeover. In a move that combines historical pride with futuristic travel, the state has officially launched the new ‘Rajmata Jijau’ bus service. This is not a minor addition; it is a comprehensive modernisation of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) fleet.

Naming the new fleet ‘Rajmata Jijau’ is a highly symbolic gesture for Maharashtra. The government chose this name to honour the “Matrushakti” or motherly power that shaped the region’s history.
For decades, the MSRTC has used iconic names like Shivneri, Shivshahi, and Hirkani to distinguish its premium offerings. The addition of Rajmata Jijau builds on this proud tradition. It ensures that every time a passenger boards one of these buses, they are reminded of the rich cultural heritage that defines the region they are visiting.
Massive Expansion Plans
The government isn’t stopping with just a few vehicles. The current plan calls for the gradual deployment of 3,000 advanced buses. This is only the first phase of a larger overhaul that will replace ageing vehicles and increase service frequency on high-demand routes.
Long-distance travellers in the state have frequently expressed concerns about its reliability. The MSRTC anticipates that injecting such a large number of modern units into the system will significantly reduce breakdown rates. Safety was a major topic of discussion during the inauguration. Every Rajmata Jijau bus is outfitted with four high-definition CCTV cameras that monitor the interior and ensure passenger safety. This is a critical step toward improving public transportation safety for women and solo travellers.
Additionally, the buses are equipped with panic buttons and GPS tracking systems. In the event of an emergency, assistance can be dispatched immediately to the precise location of the vehicle. A public announcement system allows drivers to keep passengers up to date on upcoming stops and safety protocols in real time.
Smart Features for Smart Travel
Modern commuters demand more than just a seat; they want information at their fingertips. These buses feature electronic route display boards that can be seen from a distance, putting an end to the days of squinting at hand-painted signs. These digital displays provide clear information about the destination and rest stops along the way.
The first batch of 50 buses has already been deployed in Nagpur, serving as a pilot project for the rest of the state. These will primarily serve as shuttle services between major cities, with a focus on high-traffic corridors that require the most speed and efficiency. The “shuttle” model is expected to significantly reduce waiting times.
A Greener Future Ahead
While the current fleet is based on modern diesel and CNG engines, the long-term vision discussed at the launch points to a greener Maharashtra. Officials hinted that future phases of the Rajmata Jijau service would include a switch to electric buses to reduce the carbon footprint of the state’s vast transportation network.
The ultimate goal is to develop an environmentally friendly, efficient transport system that is deeply rooted in the state’s identity. With the introduction of these first 3,000 buses, Maharashtra demonstrates that it can honour its past while driving headlong into a modernised future.
