The second section of the Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road, which connects Worli and Marine Drive, was officially opened by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The 6.25 kilometer tunnel, which runs from Haji Ali.
Amarsons, will reduce the 40–50 minute travel time between Worli and Marine Drive to only 8 minutes. This tunnel was built with the aid of cutting-edge technologies. The northbound portion of the coastal road, which opened in March and presently serves traffic between Worli and Marine Drive, connects with the southbound arm, which is open from 7 am to 11 pm on weekdays.
In a significant stride towards enhancing Mumbai’s infrastructure, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the second phase of the Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Coastal Road on June 10, 2024. This phase, encompassing a 6.25-kilometer stretch from Haji Ali to Amarsons, is poised to revolutionize urban commuting by substantially reducing travel time between Worli and Marine Drive from the current 40-50 minutes to a mere 8 minutes.
Project Overview
The Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road is a monumental infrastructure project designed to alleviate Mumbai’s notorious traffic congestion and provide a seamless connection along the city’s western coastline. The project spans a total of 10.58 kilometers, with the second phase contributing a critical segment that includes a state-of-the-art tunnel. This tunnel, extending from Haji Ali to Amarsons, is engineered with advanced construction technologies to ensure durability and safety.
Inauguration Highlights
The inauguration ceremony was marked by a unique event where Chief Minister Shinde, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, traversed the newly constructed tunnel in a vintage 1933 Rolls-Royce 20/25 convertible. This gesture symbolized a blend of Mumbai’s rich heritage with its progressive infrastructural developments.
Chief Minister Shinde emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “Today, the second phase of Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road has been opened. This tunnel is 6.25 km long from Haji Ali and Amarsons. In the month of July, this will open till Worli. Advanced technology has been used in the construction of this tunnel.”
Technological Advancements
The construction of the tunnel involved the use of cutting-edge engineering techniques to address the challenges posed by Mumbai’s coastal geology. The project employed advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) capable of efficiently excavating through varied soil conditions while minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, the tunnel is equipped with modern safety features, including ventilation systems, fire safety mechanisms, and real-time monitoring facilities to ensure commuter safety.
Impact on Urban Mobility
The operationalization of this phase is expected to have a transformative impact on urban mobility in Mumbai. By providing a direct route between key city points, the coastal road will significantly reduce travel times, thereby enhancing productivity and quality of life for commuters. Moreover, the diversion of traffic from existing congested routes is anticipated to alleviate pressure on the city’s road network, leading to improved traffic flow and reduced vehicular emissions.
Future Developments
Looking ahead, the project is slated for further expansion, with plans to extend the coastal road to Worli by July 2024. This extension will complete the envisioned seamless corridor along Mumbai’s western seaboard, further enhancing connectivity and supporting economic growth in the region. The successful completion of this project underscores the Maharashtra government’s commitment to infrastructural excellence and urban development.
