NHAI Is Arranging a Revolutionary SeThe State Highways Department (NH wing) has begun acquiring land for the construction of a new greenfield four-way bypass road connecting Virattipattu to Nagamalai Pudukottai in Madurai. This project is expected to be completed in the near future. The completion of the Kochadai grade separator has made it easier for city traffic to flow up to Virattipattu via HMS Colony.

The 3.53-kilometer road, which is expected to cost ₹260 crore, will start a short distance from the grade separator’s end. Bypassing the Kanyakumari-Bengaluru highway, it intends to give commuters from HMS Colony, Achampattu, Virattipattu, and Nagamalai Pudukottai an alternative route to the Kochi-Bodi national highway.
There is traffic because the existing narrow two-way road that connects the city to the Kochi-Bodi NH passes through the residential areas of Virattipattu and Achampattu. When the new road is finished, it will relieve this congestion and improve safety and traffic flow because the present two-way road has been more likely to have minor accidents as a result of growing traffic numbers.
In May 2024, the State Highways Department’s National Highways (NH) wing initiated the land acquisition process for a new greenfield four-lane bypass road in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This strategic infrastructure project aims to connect Virattipattu and Nagamalai Pudukottai, enhancing traffic flow and reducing congestion in the region.
Project Overview:
- Route and Length: The proposed bypass spans approximately 3.53 kilometers, commencing a few meters from the terminus of the Kochadai grade separator and extending to Nagamalai Pudukottai. media.biltrax.com
- Estimated Cost: The project is projected to cost around ₹260 crore. media.biltrax.com
Infrastructure Details:
- Bridges and Flyovers: The bypass will feature three minor bridges to traverse channels such as Kiruthumal and Madakulam, ensuring the natural flow of these waterways remains unimpeded. Additionally, a small flyover with an underpass is planned to bypass the Bengaluru-Kanyakumari Highway near Nagamalai Pudukottai. media.biltrax.com
Strategic Importance:
This bypass is designed to facilitate the smoother transportation of goods, particularly agricultural produce like spices, fruits, and vegetables from Theni into Madurai city. By providing an alternative route, the bypass aims to decongest existing city roads, thereby improving travel times and reducing vehicular emissions.
Current Progress:
The land acquisition process has commenced, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development. This phase involves detailed surveys, negotiations with landowners, and adherence to regulatory frameworks to ensure a fair and transparent acquisition process.
Community Impact:
While the project promises substantial benefits in terms of traffic decongestion and economic growth, it also necessitates the acquisition of land, which may impact local communities and landowners. The State Highways Department has expressed its commitment to engaging with stakeholders to address concerns and provide appropriate compensation, aiming for a balance between infrastructure development and community welfare.
The initiation of the land acquisition for the Virattipattu-Nagamalai Pudukottai four-lane bypass road represents a pivotal step towards enhancing Madurai’s infrastructure. Upon completion, this project is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity, bolster economic activities, and contribute to the overall development of the area.
