River Lighthouses on the Brahmaputra: A Rs 84 Cr Vision for 24×7 Navigation

River Lighthouses on the Brahmaputra: A Rs 84 Cr Vision for 24×7 Navigation

Consider the mighty Brahmaputra, a river so vast it feels like an inland sea, shrouded in the thick, mystical mists of the Northeast. For decades, this “Son of Brahma” has been a sleeping giant of commerce, largely dormant once the sun sets below the horizon. But that’s about to change. With a bold investment of Rs 84 crore, India is laying the groundwork for a maritime revolution by constructing its first inland river lighthouses.

Beacons in the Mist

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has officially laid the groundwork for four strategic river lighthouses on National Waterway-2. These aren’t just decorative towers; they’re advanced navigational sentinels. Standing 20 meters tall, each structure will serve as a guiding light for vessels that were previously forced to drop anchor at dusk due to the river’s treacherous, shifting channels.

Strategically Placed Sentinels

The project focuses on four key locations: Pandu in Kamrup (Metro), Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, Silghat in Nagaon, and Biswanath Ghat. While three of these are located on the south bank, Biswanath Ghat will guard the north. These points were carefully selected to cover the 891 km navigable stretch of the Brahmaputra, ensuring that the waterway remains open from Dhubri to Sadiya without interruption.

Solar Power and Safety

In an effort to promote sustainability, these lighthouses will be entirely powered by solar energy. They have a geographical range of 14 nautical miles and an illuminated range of 8-10 nautical miles. They will be outfitted with weather observation sensors, which will provide captains with real-time data in addition to lighting. This technology is the “secret sauce” that will enable cargo ships to safely navigate fog and rain.

A Surge in Cargo Traffic

Why now? The numbers tell the story. Cargo movement on the Brahmaputra increased by a staggering 53% in the fiscal year 2024-25. As industries such as tea, coal, and fertiliser increasingly rely on the river, round-the-clock operations have become logistically necessary. The goal is to transform the river into a full-fledged freight corridor that operates even when the city is asleep.

Beyond Navigation: Tourism Hubs

The government is doubling down on its “Lighthouse Tourism” initiative. Each of the four locations will be more than just a functional pillar. The Rs 84 crore budget covers the construction of museums, amphitheatres, and cafeterias in each location. Families will soon be able to spend weekend getaways at these locations, enjoying landscaped public spaces and children’s play areas while watching massive barges pass by.

Slashing Logistics Costs

One of the most compelling reasons for this project is the sheer cost of water transportation. Cargo transportation by river is roughly one-third the cost of road transport and half the cost of rail. By allowing 24×7 navigation, the project effectively increases the “uptime” of the waterway, making it a far more appealing option for businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprint and logistics costs.

Breaking the Night Barrier

For many years, the “night barrier” was the main bottleneck for NW-2. Ships would frequently lose valuable hours waiting for daylight to safely navigate the sediment-rich waters. These “Deepstambh” (Lighthouses) serve as a statement of intent, informing the world that the Northeast’s waterways are officially open for business at all times. It represents a shift from seasonal, daytime use to a strong, perennial industrial artery.

The 24-Month Countdown

The project is being carried out through a collaboration between the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) and the Inland Waterways Authority of India. With contracts awarded and technical surveys completed, the clock is ticking. Within the next 24 months, the silhouette of the Brahmaputra will be permanently altered by these glowing sentinels, ushering in a new era of connectivity for Assam and the Northeast.
