Land Acquisition Begins for 77.4-km PMRDA Ring Road

The district administration is acquiring land for the PMRDA Ring Road project, aiming to reduce traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The project, spanning 743.41 hectares, will improve regional connectivity and ease urban traffic, with a significant portion already marked as non-agricultural.

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has initiated the land acquisition process for the ambitious 83.12-kilometer Inner Ring Road project, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity in and around Pune.

Project Overview The Inner Ring Road is designed to encircle Pune, providing a direct route for vehicles to access various highways without traversing the city’s congested roads. This strategic infrastructure is expected to divert heavy vehicular traffic away from urban areas, thereby reducing congestion and enhancing travel efficiency. The total project cost is estimated at ₹14,200 crore.

  • First Phase: Focuses on a 4.7-kilometer stretch from Solu to Vadgaon Shinde. Approximately 28 hectares of land are required, encompassing three villages: Solu (13.17 hectares), Nirgudi (9.32 hectares), and Vadgaon Shinde (5.71 hectares). The district administration anticipates completing this phase within the next three to four months.
  • Second Phase: Targets a 6.5-kilometer segment from Alandi to Wagholi along Ahmednagar Road. Proposals for acquiring 115 hectares across 13 villages have been submitted to the district collector.

Financial Allocations and Incentives

PMRDA has earmarked ₹113 crore for land acquisition, with 30% of this amount already deposited with the district collector’s office to expedite the process. To encourage voluntary land surrender, a 25% bonus is being offered to landowners, aligning with the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act.

Integration with Other Infrastructure

The Inner Ring Road will intersect with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation’s (MSRDC) Outer Circular Ring Road at Solu village, creating a comprehensive network to streamline traffic flow around Pune. Additionally, a 5.7-kilometer section of the road falls within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits, passing through Lohegaon.

The PMC is responsible for developing this segment before transferring it to PMRDA. Notably, a five-meter-wide space has been reserved for future metro rail tracks, underscoring the city’s commitment to multi-modal transport solutions. The successful execution of this project hinges on the collaboration between various governmental bodies:

  • PMRDA: Oversees the overall planning and implementation of the Inner Ring Road Conducts joint measurements and valuations for land acquisition, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks. Manages the development of specific road sections within its jurisdiction, such as the Lohegaon stretch.

Upon completion, the Inner Ring Road is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in Pune by providing alternative routes for heavy vehicles and facilitating quicker access to highways. This infrastructure development is poised to support the city’s rapid growth and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

The proactive measures taken by PMRDA and associated authorities reflect a concerted effort to address Pune’s transportation challenges through strategic planning and execution.
