Koraput: Women halt road construction near bauxite mines

On Monday, women members of the Maliparbat Surakhya Samiti physically halted the construction of a road going to the bauxite mines in Semiliguda, Koraput.

The agitators halted the earthmover’s work in protest against the road’s construction. According to Semiliguda Zilla Parishad member Mohan Jani, an agency began constructing the road under the guise of putting mobile towers in the area. “When we brought the situation to the administration’s attention, neither the police nor the local tehsildar divulged the name of the road building company,” he claimed.

According to sources, Mythri Infrastructure and Mining was building the road to the Maliparbat mines on behalf of Hindalco. The government has leased the bauxite mines of Maliparbat to Hindalco Ltd, according to a leader of the Koraputia Jana Surakhya Sangha.

Residents near Maliparbat, on the other hand, have been protesting the proposed bauxite mining. “No operations should be carried out in the area because the matter is pending before the High Court,” he stated. 28 villagers were arrested in September of last year for allegedly vandalising the public hearing location in Kankadaamba in protest. To prevent any unpleasant incidents, a strong contingent of police officers has been stationed in the vicinity.
