Kolkata’s KMRCL has accelerated the construction of an underwater metro tube

The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) has accelerated the construction of the country’s first underwater tunnel beneath the Hooghly River, with the project expected to open in 2023. This underwater tunnel will provide metro connectivity between Howrah and Kolkata, with a 520-meter section of the 16.6-kilometer east-west stretch running beneath the riverbed. The underwater tunnel corridor, which will connect Kolkata and Howrah, is being built 33 metres beneath the riverbed. Furthermore, significant passagework has been completed, with the goal of allowing commuters to exit the tunnel through a special passage if a technical problem arises inside the water tunnel area.
